Atsia: Two-Eyed Seeing
Two-Eyed Seeing is the is a native Canadian concept for learning to see from one eye the strengths of ways of knowing passed down from those who came before us, while keeping the other eye on evidence from scientific inquiry.
At Atsia, we use both ways of seeing together, to reach wellness. Atsia has deep roots on Turtle Island, which refers to the continent of North America. The name comes from traditions which envisioned the land as a turtle that holds the world and everything on it, on its back.
Atsia's Story
Atsia means mother in the language of the Esselen people.
Atsia is an indigenous wellness brand formed from the appreciation of both the traditional knowledge of indigenous people and evidence-based science. Using only the highest quality materials our products are designed and made in Canada.
Our women-led and indigenous owned company aims to bring your family products that will inspire wellness in a way that is tied to our shared land (Turtle Island). Use it in good health.
Why the Symbol of the Dolphin?
Years ago, and for many years before, people observed the behaviour of two animals near the sea: the crab and the dolphin. They noticed that when you have a basket of crabs, you don't need to make a lid for it. When one crab goes to climb out to safety the others drag it back in.
When dolphins are in trouble, however they help each other. If ever a dolphin is trapped in a fishing net, it will call out to its friends. The fellow dolphins will stay with the tangled friend, even bombarding the net together until everyone is safe free.
